A Public Meeting in London; My Perspectives

A Public Meeting in London; My Perspectives

On the eve of our Independence day an impromptu public meeting was organised by the Bangladesh nationalist Party ; I think for UK usage we must not use the abbreviated term of the party as the listener of the abbreviation immediately relates the name with a very anti immigrant political party of UK. Which   we ought to be very careful as our second- third generation is hearing the bad names of the other party with the similar sounding name that we often use. I guess it’s high time to think about it and if need be re-brand and re- launch just for UK.
It was an excellent initiative by UK unit of the party and the consent of Mr T. Rahman to give a rare audience to the party leaders and workers and supporters was like buy one get one free offer. Indeed it was the need of the hour. The party ranks and file is exhausted after a long battle of abandoning the election and after the election there seems to an undeclared lull prevailing in both sides of the world. The overwhelming support base in the UK of the party must be an eyes shore for a host of people and observers.
The meeting was organised and orchestrated to talk about the declaration of independence – an every prolonging unnecessary debate where a very biased school of thought is trying untiringly to undermine ziaur rahman and malign him to make the other leaders the champions. Irony of our nation is going on and on, there seems to be no let up in this.
There is a saying, ‘’one should not try to reinvent the wheel’’.We the people we know what happened on that day the 26th March 1971.
The yesterday’s meet was to reiterate those glorious moments of Ziaur Rahman’s announcements and refute the claims by the other party with historical evidence. This to my understanding should be sufficed to nullify their ill conceived claim.
But here I am going to throw some light into the meeting and its intricate aspects observed by me and my perspectives hitherto untold;
Bangladesh nationalist party has yet again proved that, they will stand tall shoulder to shoulder to proclaim the near lost sovereignty.
Tarek Rahman remains to be the undisputed skipper of the schooner; inching towards to command the fleet of the nationalist flotilla.
The emergence to prominence of Dr M.A. Malik , the reward that Mr Tarek Rahman has been generous enough to present to him; was  a matter of sheer pleasure and was of a great praise. Dr.M.A. Malik was personally invited to take up a seat with Mr T.Rahman was a victory for a group of people including Dr M.A.Malik.
It yet again proves that, Hard work with true sense of conviction does never go unnoticed; When all his peers and friends are putting their feet up on the stool and relaxing their long deserved pension and enjoying the finer aspects of a retired life; touring the world, sipping a cup of coffee with grand children on a alfresco cappuccino bar in the sunny Mediterranean holiday spots ; at that very moment this septuagenarian gentleman has dedicated his leisure and pleasure for the cause of his beloved homeland. An elusive piece of land for him. Been living in the UK for more than 50 years but his resolve to see his country a prosperous and a true democratic state has never have abandoned him – age has surrendered to his conviction and there seems  be a no apparent slowing up.
Dr Malik over the last couple of years has been proactively delivering speeches after speeches in seminars, symposiums, meetings and gathering promoting the nationalist ideology and ensures true patriotic government to govern the country. He seems like a lone ranger with his army of compatriots & buddies who have been doing an inspirational work below the surface – which the community of politicians and media and the community at large have failed to fathom.
There remains a few names to mention; who have been the main savior of the  impetus of the movement against tyranny, against transit, against Indian aggression, against extra  judicial killing, against persecution of Zia family, against the thumping the media and press and against all sorts of heinous conspiracy with the country. These few pioneers along with Dr. Malik has been the vanguard of all protest mechanism and these few gentlemen have staged in access of 200 of these meeting and promote these meeting, finance these get to gather from their own pockets and media managements. Without any auspicious support from anyone.
These few people are namely, Major Farok Ahmed, Major Syed Siddique, Mr. Ahmed Azad and a few others who have shown me the true sense of conviction and patriotism. They have weathered all odds and faced all sorts of opposition and abuses and numerous attempts of cyber bullying and cyber attack on their web publication and other all kinds intimidation. Yet they persevered to excel to reach to their quest. Nothing could stop them.
Yesterday, I was overwhelmed with the invitation for Dr Malik to share the same stage, the courteous embracing of each other as if they are known to each other for ages and the mutual camaraderie, the exchanges of niceties has proven that Mr T. Rahman is the true standard bearer of the great leader of Bangladesh and he is the true descendant of countries greatest of all leaders to take up the role to carry the baton of his Zia’s vision, his aspirations, his dream of a first Bangladesh.
In the dire shortage of brains - technocrats and the prudent acumen of policy making crisis have reached all heights. The move of yesterday has yet again convinced me that, this new baton bearer is looking for change and is ready to break ranks of the monotonous trend of politics and bring upon long cherished changes.
There hinges a lot of hopes, aspirations, resolve and conviction. Nevertheless, I am delighted to see the spontaneous sense of courteousness and true sense of appreciations.  May this practice continue to make the whole business of politics a place of cohesion, co existence and cooperation.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDANCE

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDANCE

Study history, study history. In history lies all the secrets of statecraft.
The controversy of the history of our war of independence has been a sticking issue for the last 42 years. The relentless perseverance of shoving the new history down our throat has become a recurring phenomenon in Bangladesh. But it will not achieve the ultimate goal that they want to fulfil. So long the liberation generations are still and live and kicking they will never allow any fabrication of the history of our mighty liberation war of 1971. I have seen the whole liberation and independence to unfold in front of my own eyes.
One dreadful night of 25th march 1971 the blackest of all nights fell onto the fate of Bengali people, the crackdown by the Pakistani junta – the massacre, the barbaric genocide, indiscriminate shooting to annihilate the Bengalis, the heinous killing of the twentieth century stunned the whole nation. They were taken by surprise, the atrocity and the loss of loved ones made the whole nation numb for a few days to come.  The carcases, the dead bodies of human being and the animals and the magnitude of rapes and other sexual and inhumane activities by the barbaric Pakistan army made us running scared and retreating from the oncoming onslaught of the aggressive military. They whole nation was running with their heart in their throat. The undisputed architect and the leader of our liberation were rounded up on that very fateful night along with his entire family member and were taken into solitary confinement where they were kept incommunicado. The whole nation was floating in the deep sea of despair without an oar to sail to the right direction. There was not definitive sequence of directive, a plan or an order as to what the nation would do in the event of this kind- I guess the crackdown and massacre by the Pakistan army was never envisaged. The barbaric Pakistan army zealots thought they will once for all douse the fire of movement and protest and the urge for a self governed province by cracking down and show down of arms and killing.
The 14th infantry division of the Pakistan army; the eastern command; the heinous and barbaric army under the command of the butcher of Pakistan General Tikka Khan were planning and inching in towards all the divisional, district and sub divisional towns to thwart the demand of a separate county/state once for all; and they would have easily succeeded had there been; if,
On that very crucial juncture of the fate of the nation there came and voice from the ether via the radio.........came from the mouth of an unknown Major of the mighty east Bengal regiment – a voice of assurance, a voice of resistance, a voice of pronouncement, a voice of showing a sense of purpose and resolve, a voice of perseverance , a voice to uphold the patriotism, a voice of courage, a voice of bravery and zeal and sacrifice.....the nation turned around and pulled itself together, the voice from the radio and its baritone utterance and its bass and the sermon to pick up the arms and defend the ground and the repulse the enemy and regain the freedom threw a life line to the nation on the morning after the crackdown.

This was the epic call – a call which changed the history and the map of the world. And that unknown Major of the east Bengal regiment was no one but Major Zia.
In that crucial theatre of crisis in Chittagong there were all minors and Zia was the only major and major of courage and a major of extreme patriotism, a major of sacrifice above all a major who brought courage, life and pulse back into the soul, mind and the body the race.

Major Zia was the only protagonist in that theatre who was the sole hero of the episode – an epitome scene; a landmark drama of our national history. A history that is , no one must try to tamper with;  history takes its own course where it is very difficult to fabricate and engineer history of the past retrospectively which is bound to back fire and the history will not be very kind to them who tries to do that.

Zia the hero of 1971 – your hero, the nation’s hero will remain as our only undisputed hero who dared all odds of the raging fiery barrels to accept any consequences to declare the mighty fight back.
He was the first who declared the armed war against the perpetrators; the liberation war stats from there.
The declaration of independence and to repulse and dislodge the enemy with a struggle with and arms and ammunitions only came from his mouth but none. No matter how much gloss anyone wants put into it or how much fabrication a quarter tries.  Zia will always be perceived as the hero of the hour.
It was a matter of sheer bravery, a mammoth act of courage, vigour and an extreme example of highest degree of patriotism. No one else had the means, courage, statesmanship, the followers, the army, creditability amongst his peers and subordinate, initiative and skills to stand up against the mighty Pakistan army – endangering his own family life and kith and kin’s. No one had that magnitude of state of mind to embrace any consequence and sacrifice but Zia.

The impact that announcement to start the armed resistance and repulsion threw a life line to the rest of the nation in the state of confusion, it gave a definitive sense of direction and a purpose and an assurance to break the ranks for all the members of the East Bengal regiment, EPR, Police, Ansar – Muzahids and the peasants, the school and college and university students to come out with the extreme degree of courage and heroism to pick up arms and start defending the nation with arms, guns, lancers, spades, shovels, bow and arrows. What a sense of purpose that declaration brought upon to the nation by that unknown Major is unbelievable unless any one has seen it. It was the best moment of that hour of crisis.

That was indeed the call of independence. That proclamation did pave the way for the organic war of liberation and it gave all the leaders and workers and the defected members of the armed forces to work in unison to put resistance to stop the advancing of the junta.
No matter how much any school of thought tries it. The history will always uphold the contribution of Major Zia in 1971 and it will always place him on highest of the altar of the podium of our liberation war among the rest of the architects of our liberation.
Let there be no doubt as to who was the hero of the hour of need of the nation
It was Zia with his dedication and patriotism and his passion.
Long live the memory of Zia and his vision

DEMOCRACY

WHAT DOES DEMOCRACY MEAN IN BANGLADESH

Imran Chowdhury

Democracy; Perhaps the most uttered word in the vocabulary in our country.
It always baffled a whole host of people, political leaders, observers, the silent mass & the non engaged mediocre citizens of Bangladesh at large; as to what the word democracy mean.
The leaders, political class, the supporter’s base, the voters all want democracy.
But if raises numerous answered questions, what  it means  by ‘’democracy ‘’ as far as one can see since the fall of the old military junta’s regime of steamroller (so they say) the democracy just given us nothing but changing the Guard.
The questions of quality, meaning, well being, peoples’ power and the restoration of the good order and discipline remain a bridge too far. Then why are we so fond of changing the guard; who are we facilitating for what reason and why we get so enthusiastic – we are be fooled time and time again in this myth?
Not indicating anything else but want some answers to the questions- so does the rest of the country. What pragmatic changes have been brought upon from all these change of the guards?
The people of the country are put through a crucifying phase of excruciating pain to the change the old guard and install a new one.
One claims to be the better choice than that of the other (s) but the polity, the governance, the usage of govt organisations and agencies to punish the same public who just facilitated them to ascend to the throne does not make any change due to the change of the old guards to the new guards.
The main ingredient of a thriving democracy is the participation of the people and the voters in the electoral College and the process. This does not happen in that nick of the woods. Why democratically elected peoples’ representatives don’t become answerable to their people and turn into a neo feudalistic ruler. Same human being acts as the judge, accused, the jury and the investigator. It’s a beggar’s belief.
Peoples’ participation and consultation are not taken into cognizance yet the new ideologies, isms and political legacy are  shoved down the throat. New cultures and ethos are bulldozed into the public domain and establish them by their cronies forcefully. Imagine how uncomfortable those have made the people and the silent middle Bangladesh; who’s hopes, aspirations and their contribution to the society thrown aside to embrace the ill conceived ones’. What an utter disappointment.
The very fabric of the society is eroding and declining faster than anything else.  Ill perceived rat race of climbing the economical ladder seems to have taken over all the niceties of life.
The cantankerous attitude, indecent mudslinging turning more personalised is ruining the total morality of the upcoming generations – the ruling class and other stake holders of the society are citing bad examples for the future generations to inherit and hollow and a shallow moral savings account.
Only the usage the public find itself is in the mist of all of this is they are the main catalyst agent to expedite the change of the guards and as soon as the changing ceremony take place the public is thrown into the gutter of garbage till such time when they are again needed to play the catalyst to expedite the change. The public at times feels suffocated and undergoes a state of hostage life waiting for the ransom to pay off to remove themselves from the shackle of unease and suffocation.
It is a novelty to talk about the Westminster type of democracy; it is an aspiration to emulate them but by the looks of it; it all seems imprudent political rhetoric. It is conniving ploy to yet again to befool the public  as soon as the ceremony, the pomp, the extravagant mammoth expenses of the tax payers money brings the new faces to guard the people ; the new guard immediately forget all about them who actually battled to install them into glamorous world of power. Often that change makes the people bleed and every times it seems an all out skirmishes outbreak to smooth-en the transition to happen. There seems to be no let up in that bloody process. The changing of the scene in the theater of power is getting uglier, bloodier, damaging by the day.
Is that what democracy means? When will we see a bit of better behavior, better knowledge, better qualities of leadership, better quality of peoples’ life,  better state of affairs of the law & order and the list of betterment goes on and on.

Hope one day these anomalies are fast eradicated to make the country a peaceful, law abiding, democratic county sooner that happens is better and which will ascertain the meaning of the democracy.

Wish the perceptions and attentions of politicians change, the rhetoric’s and the mudslinging become more civil and frugal usage of words and clandestine comments and a true sense of courteous democracy emerge from the phoenixes of the perils of this dichotomy of feud.
